Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Bellevue, NE Test Prep tutoring
During our session on Saturday, the student and I reviewed order of operations, multiplication and division of exponents, simple interest, and measurement conversion. This overview was in preparation of her taking the math portion of the GED test. After several months of prep, she felt she was ready to take the exam on Tuesday. Overall, we had a good session. She is determined to complete her test. She had a positive attitude and outlook. I always enjoy our sessions.

During our session we really dug deep into algebra. The student did well for the most part on the homework, but she did have a bit of trouble with identifying coefficients as multiplication, and would use addition when she's supposed to use division. Other than that, she did great, and by the end of the session she seemed to understand.

During our session, the student and I analyzed the poem "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou. In this session, I gave him types of literary devices I feel he is likely to see. We looked at personification, and how the use of certain words helped to reflect the overall tone of the poem being read. I let him know that when looking at tone, it is important to understand what meaning or message the author is trying to portray. This can often give clues to the thoughts the author want to get across in the passage. In our next session we will look at another passage in poetry. In the meantime, he has a homework assignment where he must find the meanings and examples of the literary devices I gave to him this week.

During the beginning of the session, I reviewed strategies with the student for taking the SSAT. We went over concepts like using his time wisely, following directions, and making educated guesses. I also taught him the importance of carefully reading each question and all answer choices before marking his choice. Next, we worked on areas of math where he felt weak. We worked on probability, percents, fractions, and a few other concepts. He asked me to help him improve upon certain material. We also worked on factoring polynomials. We worked from several websites on his iPad and computer. We used these tools to complete math lessons and take practice tests.

During the first hour of the session, the student and I worked together in order to complete a review of both his reading and math homework. After some guidance, he was able to work independently and set up algebraic expressions after reading multi-step word problems; when asked, he could explain his work and make corrections when needed. In addition, he easily was able to not only determine the correct answer for his reading homework, but was able to show evidence in the text for his answers. Once he had shared he struggled with the diagnostic exam I assigned, he decided that we should take a closer look at the Math content in the ISEE. For the remaining portion of the session, he and I worked with using fractions, including basics of multiplication, simplification, and determining proportions. We will spend the entirety of our next session preparing for the ISEE.

During this afternoon's session, the student did a great job going through each of the VR, QR, RC, and MA sections of the ISEE Upper Level practice sets that we tried. She mentioned that she has some vocabulary lists that she will use to study to further reinforce her performance in the VR section, and I think she will find that very beneficial.
