The student and I began working on an extensive study guide to help him prepare for his AP Euro final. It is a spreadsheet that has all of the most important names, events, and terms with explanations/definitions next to each. It is broken up by time periods and general themes. This study guide will take some time to complete, but by working on it, he will most likely recall concepts from earlier this year while also creating something that he can look back at when he needs to study for the AP exam later this year.

Today, the student and I concentrated on preparing for her AP European History test on Eastern Absolutism that will be taking place on this upcoming Tuesday. To that end, we created our own study guide, divided into each of three empires (Austrian Habsburgs, Prussian, and Russian) that will be covered on the test. I then went through each of these empires with her, focusing on the basic conditions there and explaining how the rulers during this period either failed or succeeded in establishing absolutist systems in their countries. In particular, I focused on explaining the problems that each ruler faced, as well as the solutions which they devised to address these obstacles. I also gave a mini-profile of each pertinent monarch as well, so that she will have a good idea of the dominant characters during this time period.

We reviewed the student's homework assignments on the beginnings of the Cold War. He has a good understanding of most of the main issues, but needed some in-depth information regarding other issues. His understanding of issues also includes a good ability to critically analyze information and we will continue to work on further developing this skill. He was encouraged to share his specific concerns with me in advance of each session so I can be prepared to help him.

Tonight, I worked with the student on taking more effective notes. I suggested that she read an entire paragraph before writing anything in her notebook. What is hard for her is that her teacher is focusing on minute details for his quizzes, which is leading her to write more than she normally would. I also suggested that at the end of each section she verbally review everything that she has done up to that point - continually reviewing the material. The biggest suggestion I gave her is to leave her computer and phone in her room while she is trying to do her work, as they are too much of a distraction. When I left she still had a lot to do, but this material is all review for AP World from last year. We reviewed all of the sections, and she remembered a lot from last year. I think that as she gets more accustomed to the instructor and his quizzes, she will adapt her note-taking to suit his style.
