Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

The student and I worked on timing during each section of the SAT. He is overwhelmed by the timing part of the SAT. We believe it is because he has a poor time managing a huge chunk of time and then panics at the end when time is running short. To combat this, we discussed pretending that each section can be broken down into 10-minute chunks. After segmenting the sections, he was much better able to manage his time as a whole.

The student did a practice test on the calculator portion of the SAT Math test. As she answered, I was able to analyze her timing, strengths, and weaknesses. Overall, she answered 14/38 questions correctly, with guessing increasing her score to 17/38. Translating this to an overall math score would be 480/490! This is a concrete improvement from her previous scores. We also went over some of the reasons why she missed a number of the easier questions, giving her a chance to self-correct as well as learn a few facts that would really help her score. I want to do the same with the non-calculator portion, as well as go over the data analysis and more algebra concepts at our next sessions.

The student took Test 5, Section 3 timed and on her own and got 15/20. In our final session, we went over those 5 questions, and then we finished Test 5, Section 4. Afterward, we did the hard ones from Test 3, Section 3. Finally, we discussed what should go on her SAT math review sheet that she will make for herself and general test-taking strategies, most of which she has long been familiar with.

The techniques we have learned all throughout this past week will not only be useful for the SAT or ACT, but also with her future math courses. The SAT and ACT essentially test one's mastery over basic algebraic techniques and manipulations, which are present in all types of math and mathematical applications. That is why it is not a bad idea to frequently review SAT math problems even after one has taken the SAT. In this session, we reviewed the most common algebraic technique: variable isolation. (I feel that she needs more practice on this.) I also provided answers and work from an additional practice test for her to reference on her own time.

The topics I went over today were the fundamentals of Algebra and Arithmetic. The student was struggling at the beginning with the concept; however, as the session continued he picked up on the topics and felt comfortable. The student was satisfied with the pacing of the tutoring. I left the student with practice questions as a homework assignment for the next session. Overall, we had a great first session and I'm hoping to keep up the pace!

This session we went over a sample exam and worked on the student's ability to calm down and spot mathematical relationships that will help her solve the problem. She is working hard to grasp the material. I left her with a sample exam to work though at her own pace. Her only weakness is recognizing what to do and confidently moving forward with that step. Once she does that, she moves through the exam question pretty well. There are two weeks left before the test, and I feel fairly confident that she will achieve the score she needs.
