Bellevue, NE Reading tutoring
The student began the session with reading games on the computer. We then worked on blending sounds to make words with a football game online. Also, we read a story on the computer and followed directions to make a snowman. Afterwards, he did a reading worksheet on compound words and spelling. He did very well today and was on task.

We worked on adverbs and spelling in our session today. The student did well identifying adverbs and verbs, but we will continue working on placing appropriate adverbs in sentences to match the content. In spelling, we did a "word maker" activity, and he did great! We will continue adverb work next week.

I spoke with the student's teacher, and she advised me to work on vocabulary and reading comprehension with the student. We started our first session with vocabulary development using the words "whim" and "quizzical." She had never heard either word before, so we discussed meanings and uses for each of the words. Then we did a "reading warm up" exercise about June bugs. She did very well at reading and answering the comprehension questions. Then for the last hour we worked on a reading unit called "Water World." She read the page-long selection silently, then aloud. We discussed it paragraph by paragraph, then she answered some literal, inferential, and application questions about the selection. Her attitude throughout the session was great. She was a delight to work with. I look forward to our next session.

Student 1 and I did exercises with hyperbole, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. We worked on analogies after studying ways to better solve them. Also, we read an excerpt from Shakespeare's, "As You Like It" and discussed its meaning. He used context clues to find the definitions of a number of the words. We also read an excerpt from Frederick Douglass and one from Ulysses Grant. We discussed how to learn vocabulary for the SSAT. Student2 began by editing a paragraph with errors in it. We then read an article about Galileo and discussed the main idea. We read an article about adaptation in animals, and she was described the main ideas and gave examples from the article. He then practiced solving analogies, used cloze to complete a poem, and used antonyms in context to find the meanings of unknown words. He also made 3 cards with vocabulary words, definitions, and sentences.

The student shows real improvement in his reading ability. He still lacks patience when it comes to slowing down and sounding out unfamiliar words, but I'm not as worried about this since he's showing motivation, even though he might need reminding to slow down from time to time. We have one session left, and we'll be going over more advanced books as well as continuing to work on spelling.

We read his baggie book as well as the ring of popcorn words to reinforce sounding out words and blending sounds. We worked on writing through building sentences with sight words. The student also wrote numerals for the numbers that I dictated. We counted objects in various arrangements, as well (rectangular, circular, line and scattered). I asked him to tell me what one more would be or one less. He was able to pay attention very well during this session and was particularly excited about counting objects.
