Bellevue, NE French tutoring
We worked on subjunctive again--it's still a little bit difficult for this student. She understands exactly when to use it--the conjugation is the rough part. We worked on her composition, which she clearly took a lot of time to put together. There were not too many errors, so there's a lot of improvement there. Conjugation in the present tense doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. We came up with a pretty solid study plan to prepare her for her upcoming projects and final exam. She knows exactly what her weaknesses are, which is good. She knows what she needs to work on. I plan on coming up with lots of practice for us to hit things pretty hard before her exam.

The student has a project with The Petit Prince that she needed help understanding. We went over the requirements and started finding quotes for it. We talked over how she can answer the rest of the questions. She said her presentation went well last week (no grade yet, but she knew all the answers to the questions).

The student and I met to prepare for her exam the next day. We talked about the difference between imparfait and passe compose. We also went over adjective formation. We then reviewed order of pronouns. I gave her some practice problems incorporating many of the concepts that she would be tested on. I also answered some questions that she had about a review sheet.

The student and I talked a bit about the future simple at the beginning of today's lesson, but we primarily covered passe compose. We reviewed the difference between etre and avoir, and I encouraged her to draw a house with all of the etre verbs exemplified around it. In the end, we did some translation examples where she had to make a choice between the more logical PC verb (etre or avoir). Her homework for this is to practice writing sentences with vocabulary that she finds interesting, using both etre and avoir verbs in passe compose.

The student's homework covered the subjunctive tense and focused on distinguishing subjunctive from indicative. We talked about the distinction and discussed examples in both English and French, though the tense does not exist in English. Then, she completed the homework. Then, I asked her to reflect on the patterns that she noticed. We created "rules" for conjugating the three types of regular verbs and identified irregular verbs. I asked her to create flashcards for the irregular verbs in the subjunctive tense. We will continue to practice the distinction between subjunctive and indicative and repeat the conjugations. I think, with more practice, she'll realize it's easier than it sounds.
