Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Bellevue, NE Elementary Math tutoring
During our session, we covered a review of multiplication or fast facts. We also went over the student's homework to see what she is currently working on and demonstrating how knowing her multiplication facts will be helpful with this current section of math. She had a great attitude and was willing to work on the material being reviewed. In this session, I suggested a fun game to play to help with learning the multiplication facts, and she liked it so much she was very excited to play with her parents. This session went well, and she was friendly and cooperative with learning and listening.

Today, the student and I reviewed division with decimals. We also looked at rounding to tenths, hundredths, and thousandths, which seems to be a struggling point for her, but it wasn't today. After math, we reviewed her assignment notebook and general organization. We discussed her language arts class and the types of assignments she receives in that class. We ended with 10 minutes of working on an Hour of Code as a reward for her hard work.

The student and I started the lesson by reviewing the capitals and USPS abbreviations for US states; I said a state aloud, and he wrote the state, its capital, and the USPS abbreviation on a separate piece of paper to practice spelling and reinforce learned material. We then spent about 30 minutes working on math, reviewing the principles of divisibility and practicing the various rules on example problems I provided. We then reviewed his vocabulary, which he has almost mastered. He had a couple questions on how to solve for mean and range and how to read a stem and leaf plot, so we looked over a few practice problems together. We then finished the lesson by practicing the various principles of divisibility.

The student and I began reviewing where we had left off 2 weeks earlier. We reviewed mass, volume and length in metric measure. At first he seemed lost and then the more we reviewed it the more he remembered. We worked on his homework. I used Legos to help him understand the concept of fractions and he applied this to his homework. We reviewed homographs and applied this to his spelling for this week and he did well with this. We worked on his multiplication tables and word problem solving. He seems to understand what concept needs to be applied to a word problem but then lacks the understanding to carry it out. We are working on this.

The student and I continued to work on two and three step word problems. Today the questions involved determining if he needed to use multiplication or division. He has been doing much better at following the procedures for word problems that we have been practicing. He and I also looked at how to use a dictionary briefly, since this was a part of his reading homework that he was unsure of.
