Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Bellevue, NE Chemistry tutoring
During this session we reviewed the student's lab data to help her understand how to interpret it. We first looked at her HPLC data. I explained to her what the peaks signify and the meaning of the height of the peak versus the area beneath. We discussed how she should construct the standard curve necessary to determine the concentration of her unknown. She did not have all the data required to complete the analysis so we moved on to the fluorescence lab after I explained what she should do with the data once she acquires it from her lab partner. The fluorescence data required some manipulation via Excel and once she had the data adjusted and plotted properly, the rest of the analysis became much clearer.

We worked through three practice quizzes that covered electron configuration, enthalpy, periodic trends, and radioactive elements. The student did well recognizing the different problem types. He also did especially well with enthalpy questions. Radioactivity and periodic trends will require some memorization. He seems to be very prepared for this upcoming exam.

Today, the student and I went reviewed her practice exam and how to solve each problem. We discussed the solubility properties of gases in liquids using the ideal gas law, molecule polarity and intermolecular forces, osmotic pressure and the Van't Hoff factor, properties of gases and their relative ideal gas behavior, gas effusion rates, and various stoichiometry problems regarding ideal gases, concentration, heat transfer and colligative properties.

The student worked on some of his Spanish homework. In addition, we began a broad review of chemistry, starting from the periodic table families and properties and working our way up to balancing equations. The goal is to make him faster with the basics as he prepares for his final exam. He improved in balancing equations, and he showed a strong base for his knowledge in the periodic table.

The student and I reviewed long notation for electron orbitals, noble gas notation, and using arrow and line diagrams to define an element. We also went over each orbital (s, p, d, f), and how the electrons fill in. He did his practice homework/study guide for chemistry, and then we went over his math packets and reviewed for his test (graphing, slope-intercept form, finding a line equation given 2 points, slopes of vertical and horizontal lines).

Today we went over functions and we focused on word problems which the student understood well. Then we did some practice problems from her packet. Then we focused on chemistry, particularly understanding states of matter and understanding gas laws. I gave her some tips to help her remember some concepts and we did a quick rundown of each topic and she understood the material and was able to recite them back to me and also answer every question I had for her.
