Today, he finished the remainder of his test review. He had not had any additional problems from last time. On the portion of the review that went over material from previous tests, he did hesitate to remember what he needed to do. Once he had completed the review, I wrote up an extra set of questions to help him get more familiar with identifying GCFs and square binomials. He started focusing more on what patterns he could derive before doing any work, which helped him significantly.

We went over homework which included solving system of inequality equations. We used graphing to solve the system of inequalities. Then we did practice problems to determine if an ordered pair was a possible solution to a system of equations. We also did word problems where we had to make a system of inequalities to represent the word problem.

The student and I began this session by reviewing his homework assignment on quadratic equations and parabolas. Because we had discussed the section even before his teacher lectured on it in class, we were well prepared to do the assignment. We then began our review of chapter 8 in preparation for his test next Monday. I started by going through each section and pointing out the important concepts and methods discussed in each one. We ended our session with a few practice problems from these sections, and we planned to devote the majority of our next session to going through practice problems.

Completed this week's session. The student had already done the first problem, a combinatorics question that asked how many straight flushes can be made from a deck of cards. Other topics included determining a whole number whose square root is between 18 and 19, computing the rate at which a job is done, finding the shortest addition chain to get to 222, and identifying a four-digit palindrome that is the sum of two three-digit palindromes.
