Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Bellevue, WA Latin tutoring
This session, we worked on the subjunctive once again, reviewing the various uses they've covered thus far. So, we reviewed the difference between purpose clauses and result clauses (similar constructions, but result clauses are usually marked by adverbs), as well as hortatory subjunctives, and the difference between indirect questions and indirect statements. We also once again reviewed the forms of all of the Latin participles and infinitives and made review sheets for them, so that the next time the student gets confused she'll have handy notes to look back at.

In today's session, the student and I reviewed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension nouns. Using the strategies I suggested the previous week, he was able to quickly and accurately remember his noun endings for each declension. We then moved on to working through the translation of a passage (Catullus) and identifying grammatical constructs as they appeared in the text. I noticed that he tends to move through his translations quickly - using his intuition to guess at a given sentence's structure. While this is possible at his current Latin level, as sentences become longer and the structure more nuanced, this will prove more difficult. To this end, I had him identify noun endings and what part of speech those endings indicated. We applied the same strategy in regards to verbs. Next week, we will continue to go through additional passages (a much more "real life" approach to grammar) in addition to practicing the construction of 1st and 2nd conjugation verbs in the present, imperfect, and future tenses.
