Session Summaries by Languages Tutors

Bellevue, WA Languages tutoring
This was a great session. We were working on some really long sentences translation. The student is going to travel a lot in the next few weeks, so we were covering translation about travel topics. For example like directions and different time zone time adjustment. He studied a lot over the Thanksgiving holiday so he made great progress. We are still focusing on listening skills and I've been talking more than before.

For the review part, I did the dictations of longer phrases. The student was able to write down most of them and knew the meaning of each individual characters but she has a hard time making sense of them when they were put together into sentences, so I broke them down and analyzed each group to let it make sense to her. In the future, I would like to start to teach her more on how to compose and understand compound phrases instead of only learning characters one by one. Today's new vocab words were: wind, sand, sandstorm, seed, tomorrow, play, and foot. Today's homework is to practice these new vocab words and write 3 more new compound phrases.

We first reviewed the daily events with order with the three students. We then learned the meaning and the writing of the 5 most essential elements: earth, fire, water, wood and gold, and from there we learned about the Chinese solar system (since the elements are used in the naming of the system). The element characters also act as important radicals in many other characters with related meanings. From there, two students also learned to read and write other related characters and words: forest, ice, planet earth, ocean, sky, etc.

Numbers 1-7, colors red green and orange, basic greetings (hello, how are you, good bye, thank you, you are welcome), animals (panda, tiger, dinosaur, etc.), objects and nouns (ball, balloon, baby, mom, dad etc.), body parts (hand, head,). We listened to a video online about colors. We sang a song that's about basic greetings. We drew Chinese characters from six to seven.

The student and I went over the previous session. I introduced new verbs and we conjugated them at the present, imparfait and passe compose. Present and past participles of the verbs of groups 1, 2 and 3 were learned. We ended the session by practicing a grammatical exercise in the form of a short story.
