The student and I learned about the electromagnetic spectrum. We learned that wavelengths and frequencies are inversely related and that light has a dual property. We worked on several practice problems to solve for frequency and wavelength. We practiced using Planck's constant to solve for the amount of energy that a photon either emits and absorbs. The student and I also learned about quantum mechanics as well as the significance of the four quantum numbers.

During today's session the student and I worked through the second chapter of the class textbook, going through concepts and problems. As he had gone through most of the chapter problems we reviewed some of the concepts in more detail and practiced some of the problems with varying details. Specifically we looked at weighted averages, cathode ray tubes, and dimensional analysis. We looked at some more details related to the history of the atom, talked about some Chemistry jargon, and reviewed our study schedule. He seems to be making great progress and developing his understanding of concepts and problems. I am quite content with both his drive to learn and his ability to grasp the work as I help him along.

This session focused heavily on titration. We started with water's natural ionization and how the normal concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide ions translate to pH. We then moved to what happens when a disassociating molecule is added to water, how the ions shift pH toward acidic or basic range. I then talked about why monoprotic weak acids cause the 'S' shape of a titration curve, the significance of the flat 'buffering region' , and the relationship between pKa and pH. The student and I worked on a few homework problems focused on diprotic acids, using dissociation constants to determine the proton concentrations and therefore the shift in pH. It took us a little bit to figure out one assumption made for diprotic acids is the concentration of the conjugate base is about equal to the dissociation constant Ka2. She had performed a titration experiment in lab earlier in the week and her results were accurate.
