Tutoring review by Marcus in Bellair-Meadowbrook Terrace, FL
My first session with the student went well. We spent a short time getting to know each other and then started a review packet he was given at school. The topics we covered in the packet mainly consisted of algebra, number sets, and linear equations. The student is a bright student and seems to understand the concepts he's learning at school, and he exhibited a confidence towards many of the questions we went over. One particular thing the student struggled with was the addition and subtraction of like terms with positive and negative signs. We reviewed these problems, and I gave him advice on how to approach it. Overall, the student understands the concepts he's learning; he just needs to polish his mechanics when solving some problems.

We went over the student's 'Simple Solutions' homework, which basically served as a review of a wide variety of material and helped to reveal a few areas that he needs to review and relearn like multiplying fractions. We went over the math test on data (graphs, mean, median, mode) that he got back and didn't do too well on. Two problems were missed in the traditional fashion-- he simply thought the answer was something else, and these two problems were about choosing the best type of graph, which was never really practiced in his homework (normally the type of graph is just given). These two problems we talked about quite a bit in order to try and show the importance of double and triple checking by reading the question twice and then comparing the answer he gets back to the question and any charts/graphs to make sure he didn't make a mistake.

On every problem the student missed on his test, he began to answer the problem using proper logic, usually setting up an equation that would have produced the desired answer, but simply talked himself out of following through on the steps. On one problem, he actually wrote the correct answer on the page but wrote no answer on the answer line, and thus received no credit, which was pretty tragic. I helped him jog his memory to finish the problems he had started, and then we moved on to working with surface area. He definitely understands his surface area problems well and answered almost every problem on his homework correctly without my help. He's definitely getting better. Some encouragement and commendation for all his hard work would probably do him good right about now. At the end of the session, I mentioned that I had been working on "The Raven" with one of my other students, and discovered that he knew the poem. I discovered recently that Poe wrote an essay detailing his own writing process during "The Raven," which is an extremely insightful and informative essay on life in general and especially the art of writing. There are countless valuable ideas in that essay. Hopefully he reads some of that essay. If he reads more, he will more quickly figure out what test questions are asking and what teachers are saying - and therefore will experience a much easier ride through school.

Tutoring review by Eunki in Bellair-Meadowbrook Terrace, FL
The student and I reviewed concepts that we covered in the past several sessions, as he had an upcoming exam. We spent most of the time doing practice problems on areas he felt weakest in, and he seemed relatively comfortable with all of his work after getting some more practice from previous questions from his notes and his book. Specifically, he had questions on converting from standard to vertex form for quadratic equations as well as identifying the vertex. Once that was cleared up, he didn't seem too nervous about his preparation.

Tutoring review by Christine in Bellair-Meadowbrook Terrace, FL
For today's session, the student and I first went over his class notes (a PowerPoint) which covered the factoring of 'special' polynomials. As we went through this PowerPoint, he completed each of the practice problems. After this, he completed his homework assignment. He recognized most of the questions and had no problem solving them. For a couple of the problems, which usually involved one more step than what he was used to, I simply guided him through the first steps and he quickly caught on. Word problems seemed to be his weakness, so we read through each problem slowly and I helped break things down for him. He had a great, open-minded attitude throughout the entire session, which I really appreciated. I look forward to meeting with him again!

Tutoring review by Corbin in Bellair-Meadowbrook Terrace, FL
For this session, the student and I focused on factoring polynomials using difference of squares method as well as the foil and reverse foil method. I noticed that after explaining to her how to solve the problem she had no trouble working out the remainder of her homework. At the end of the session she was more than confident that she knew the material well enough for her upcoming quiz.
