Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I went to the student's school for the first time. We had our session during his study period in the library. Throughout out session we focused on a makeup Geometry chapter review assignment. The main concepts within the assignment were setting up and solving various ratios and proportions and utilizing the cross-multiplication method. I think that with more practice he will be able to fully understand these concepts because as we did more problems, he was able to figure out the proportions."
"The student has an exam tomorrow, so we covered material for her exam. It was mostly on shapes, like triangles, polygons, and circles, and how to find the area/perimeter of different shapes. The most complicated problems were probably the polygons, because they required trig, but she seems to have a good understanding of SOH CAH TOA and when to use which. Also, she understood the formulas for each and how to find them in case she forgets. I recommended that she make herself a quick formula sheet that she can study before the exam."
"We worked on determining arc lengths and measures when given a central angle. We worked on the homework and did some extra problems to cement understanding. We prepared for the quiz tomorrow doing the assigned practice problems for the quiz. We'll meet once during spring break next week to finish up homework."
"Today, the student and I reviewed her homework packet. It covered topics involving finding the measurement of angles on a straight line, angles around a point, angles in a triangle and from 2 parallel lines intersected by a transversal. I thought she did well with most of the problems and had a good understanding on how to apply the concepts and solve the problem. There were a couple of problems where she had problems with how to start. Those problems were harder because they involved applying 2 and 3 concepts together in the same problem. I thought her struggle was with parallel lines and knowing how to find the measure of angles formed by parallel lines. So we briefly went over that concept after she finished the homework problems and I tested her by giving her a problem which she did excellent on. She is very smart and hard working and it was a pleasure working with her today."
"Since the student has an exam tomorrow, we spent our session yesterday reviewing material that is to be covered on the test. We started out with practice problems from the beginning of the unit and went all the way through planning and writing proofs. I expect her to do well as long as she continues memorizing the postulates, theorems, and properties and the meanings behind them."
"I had the student complete a prior algebra skills assessment. After the assessment, we worked on her geometry homework, reinforcing the polygon sum formula, and explained the relationship of polygon exterior angles for figures with varying numbers of sides. Her algebra knowledge is pretty strong, and I praised both her recall and her perseverance in being tested at the beginning of our work time. She has a positive attitude toward math, and is willing to struggle, which is a very helpful skill. Next week's plan is to continue looking at homework and assignments, and to really work on getting comfortable with the weekly assessments given in class."
