Recent Bel Air Executive Functioning Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I began the session by completing her math homework. The worksheet used basketball scoring to practice multiplication. She did a good job figuring out what shot combinations were possible, but her response time was a bit slow when asked to subtract. At one point, she went out to the kitchen and got a number chart to help her count down for subtraction. Once we finished the math homework, she chose to read A Dog's Tale. She did a great job reading and was usually able to figure out the word's pronunciation using context clues. Overall, she did a really good job today.

Today the student and I discussed her goals with her test scores. We discussed the specific areas on which she would like to work. The student expressed her satisfaction with her reading and verbal scores on the test, but expressed the desire to improve her math scores. We started doing the math problems on the first math practice test in her test prep book. We went over each problem, discussing basic math concepts and order of operations. The student is to finish the problems in the practice section for homework, as well as complete the 15 math problems that I emailed her. She is also to read the math chapters in the test prep book, which provide instructions on algebra, geometry, etc.

Assignment two included generalizing derivatives to encompass position/velocity/acceleration or other real-world story problems, as well as finding the double derivative. Assignment three covers concavity, inflection points, and other features of function graphs. He is able to execute the math we have learned well. The next step will be figuring out how to attack a problem on her own.

The student and I went over the English and Math sections today. The student is doing well with the English section. We are working on keeping her score consistently high and weeding out simple errors. She needs to work on adding commas when necessary and reading the question stems more carefully. For the math section, the student seems to have the most trouble with geometry questions. I'm having her do more practice so that she learns to catch her mistakes. I'm not worried about her conceptual understanding because when I have her redo problems she got wrong she is able to do them correctly without my assistance and understand where she made her mistake or what detail she missed.
