We continued going through the student's review packet in preparation for his final exam. This included topics such as trigonometry, Pythagorean theorem, postulates for similar triangles, and dilations. We discussed what characterizes each of the different types of problems so that he can recognize the problems correctly.

We have completed one free-response part of the AP Calculus AB test. Considering all the skills, accuracy and confidence that the student has from previous lessons and from school, the student found going over the free-response part of the test quite easy. The problems involved calculating definite integrals, rate of change of volume given the outflow, and calculating volumes of rotational objects given the shape of the outer surface. The student has reported getting 1 point shy of an A on the final test for his AP Calculus AB Class in school. The student considers this result better than expected. The last task we tackled today included a function that was given implicitly. The task was to find points on the curve that have a certain line as a tangent. Using implicit derivation, we found one point on the curve, but the formula we used did not give the other point. The strategy for such cases involves looking at the original function before doing any manipulations such as taking derivatives, implicit derivatives, etc. The reason is that having a good impression of the original curve will provide more reliable results, that is, solutions won't get lost in the derivation.

Tutoring review by Michelle in Beech Grove, IN
The student had to retake a math test. This session was to help her prepare to do well on the test the next day. The topic was working with negative numbers in the addition/subtraction operations. Also, understanding what absolute value is, calculating the absolute difference, and using number lines. I instructed on the 3 equations one deals with in addition/subtraction of numbers, how to simplify any equation to one of the 3 equations, how to work with multiple negative signs. She worked on 3 practice sets of problems and I left her with another practice set and the answers, so that she could review one more time.

Both students are currently working on circles, so we went over some of their homework problems - especially using the completing the square method to write the circle equation in standard form. I also showed them the proof for the circle equation, and introduced ellipses. With the remainder of our time, we went over quadratic application problems.
