Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We were learning about bears today, and each child had learned the word well by the end of the session. I moved around the room, showing them a picture of a bear and I also asked more questions like, "Where do bears live?" and "In the woods, there are a lot of...?" The kids said and learned "woods" and "trees," and I had them point to pictures of trees and bears and I asked them how many bears were in the picture. We also spent time making the "B" sound, and we came up with more words starting with B: book, bag, baby, etc. We also learned about cold and warm weather and we learned how to make a "brrrrr" action when it is cold. This was a wonderful session. The kids were all engaged and were well-behaved. They now know the letters A and B!!"
"The student's attitude toward sessions is improving. We started on the writing today. I would like to transition to writing and math in the future. I think his reading aloud is pretty good right now compared to the writing, which needs work."
"This evening, the student continued to work on his informational writing assignment. He is working on a composition about a world-famous soccer player. He did find additional sources of information that he could cite for his composition. He began writing his composition, and we spent most of our time discussing writing a strong opening, and then explaining the events in this athlete's life in the proper sequence, and with grade-level vocabulary. He did not have enough information to answer questions that a reader would probably have about Messi. He wrote down several questions which he will research this week so that he can fill in the gaps about this athlete's unusual career."
"We discussed the paper the student is writing on the impact of the Tet Offensive. He constructed an outline for his paper and reworked his thesis statement. I shared a few book sources and electronic sources for him to use with his research. We will meet again next week to review his research and paper. He was very knowledgeable about the topics we discussed and had good ideas for his paper."
"Today we reviewed percents, decimals, and fractions. We focused on converting one into the other, and practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. The student made good progress with decimals. We ended our session by doing analogy practice. For homework, she is going to review the words she did not know, and define the relationship between several analogy sets."
"Using the SSAT Practice Test One, we worked on general ideas for reading. There was major improvement in reading comprehension. We discussed reading through the paragraph and determining the general idea after completing the paragraph. We discussed how all points are the same for correct answers so you should do the paragraphs that are easy for you first. Correct answers are one point; incorrect answers are 1/4 point off, and omitted answers are 0, so it is better to not answer if you cannot get down to two or three answers."
