The student and I went over vocabulary, working through the various Latin and Greek roots. I quizzed him on numerous terms, and helped him see the formal connections between particular words. He did very well and seems to have a solid grasp of his vocabulary lessons.

We continued working on the student's essay on the Greek plays by Sophocles. He struggled a little with transitional sentences and getting the idea he wanted to convey on paper. However, with a little help and encouragement, he was able to articulate his ideas in writing. I am definitely starting to see improvement in his written work.

I first read the student's 20 sentences using Unit 11 vocabulary words (from a vocabulary book I have used all year) where she makes up sentences using the words. It was by far her best performance to date as she make only 3 slight punctuation errors. Then we worked on a nemesis of hers: subject-verb agreement. I drilled her repeatedly from a workbook on 6 pages of practice. I gave her a made-up ruling which should help in properly using the right form of the verb with singular and plural subjects. Lastly we worked out of another grammar book on how to recognize "double talk" in sentence writing as well as the overuse of words.

I encouraged the girls to think outside of "chapters" and create a chronology of events to get them thinking outside the box.

I had the student email me her paper, and I reviewed it, edited it, and made suggestions. The biggest comments I have are: do not use contractions in formal essay style writing, combine sentences to make more complex examples and break up the flow, and be explicit in what you say with limited words.
