Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Beaverton, OR Statistics tutoring
The student needed help with her homework. The current homework were basically probability review problems. Most of them were binomial coin toss problems. We got through most of the problems. We will be finishing up the problem set tonight. She mainly needed help with looking at the problem and determining the formula to use with the problem. She knew how to use the formulas once the type of problem was identified. I'm going to focus on this aspect for the future sessions.

We covered box plots and standard deviations. More specifically, we discussed how to draw box plots, what the lines on the box plot mean, and how to calculate standard deviation from the mean. The student fully understood the boxplots, but the standard deviations proved to be a bit more difficult. As long as she remembers to do all of the 5 steps of the calculation (including taking the square root at the end!), I do not think she will have any problems on the test.

The student and I worked on completing her midterm review sheet for her course. We were able to cover all of the problems and adequately answer each question on the packet. She is going to complete the SPSS section on her own tomorrow, and will continue to keep up with the reading and notes from her lectures.

The student and I discussed the Central Limit Theorem, which highlights how non-Normal distributions can have samples that act normal. This included comparing sample size to accuracy of prediction through probability and z-scores, and discovering how sample size impacts the standard deviation of a sample.

We worked on the student's homework together. It involved R^2, R, standard error estimate, linear regression, and multivariate regression. The questions were based on a published article, and we had to look up values from four different tables and then interpret the results.

We reviewed the student's lecture topics and then worked through the HW assignment. The lecture topics covered several continuous distributions, including the Normal, Gamma, Beta, Weibull, exponential, and lognormal distributions. We also discussed examples of where each of these distributions would be used. The HW assignment involved application of the area of the standard normal table to answer questions about the probability of various outcomes. The student had a strong understanding of the material.
