The SSAT, therefore, offers challenging content in its elementary, middle, and upper formats. If your child is in 3rd or 4th grade, they have 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete the multiple-choice exam. The middle exam, for grades 5-7, and upper, for those in grades 8 and up, are 3 hours and 5 minutes. Each exam consists of quantitative, verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and essay sections. Your child's goals can vary depending on their individual strengths and weaknesses. Once your student's independent instructor gets to work, they can create structured lessons tailored to their learning and test prep needs. Subject-specific materials and tools can be chosen based on your student's skill level and abilities. The tutor can even pick the most appropriate teaching style, or apply multiple teaching methods where applicable.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

Beaverton, OR SSAT tutoring
We reviewed several passages of English together as guided practice. The student's accuracy for this session was improved by about 2 questions per 15 question passage from previous sessions. We reviewed when to use semicolons and colons, how to attack transition word problems, and the usage of parallel structure. We worked through some tricky comma questions and went over the method of matching the keywords for sentence placement questions. I assigned the student the English and Reading portion of a practice test for homework.

We went over the correct methods and answers for math problems that the student couldn't answer in her practice test. Then we did a review of trig - sec, csc, cot vs. sin, cos, tan - as well as basic logarithm rules, and geometric and arithmetic sequences. Her attitude was great and I loved that she came prepared with the material and topics she wanted to cover during that session.

The student and I covered graphing calculator skills, i.e. calculating zeros and intersections on the TI-84. We talked about ways to circumvent difficult algebra and other operations through using the graphing function. We worked on more complex algebra, some geometry, and a lot of word problems.

We went over the next two chapters of the student's review book. She seems to understand concepts very easily. For our next session, I have assigned her to memorize some tables that she will have to know for the SAT II Chemistry. She will be tested on them first thing for our next session.

We worked on timing for the student for the writing and reading sections. He is very good at these two comparative to the math and science, which we will focus on before the exam comes. He finishes much faster and has a good grasp of the English language from what I can see. The English section isn't as spectacular as his reading section. He is always willing to do the work in order to improve his score, and this attitude will not only help him do well on this exam, but with other endeavors as well.

The student and I reviewed the homework I assigned him last time. He is doing better with English concepts, and has a good grasp of rhetorical skills, but is still struggling somewhat with grammatical errors. We will continue to work on this. Overall, though, he's made some good progress, and in our next lesson I intend to move on to the reading test. For homework, I assigned him the last passage in the test we've been working from.
