Session Summaries by Spanish Tutors

Beaverton, OR Spanish tutoring
We spent the first half hour in conversation, with the student talking about her work and some of the projects of her doctoral students. She then had a couple of questions from her journal that we discussed. We then looked at exercises from the next chapter of our reading text that she had done at home. It dealt with cognates. From there we moved on to grammar, specifically practice of the future and conditional. For "homework" she had written about some of the things she wants to do when she retires (using the future tense). We finished by looking at the next section of our novel. The student had written a summary of those pages which she read aloud to me. We then clarified a few paragraphs of the novel that were unclear.

Lastly, we reviewed the difference between the reflexive and non-reflexive forms of verbs extensively.

After that, I had her complete an exercise to practice what she had learned. She expressed that she understood the lesson better after the exercises. For homework, I asked her to complete Unit 2 of the Spanish textbook and to review a link about indefinite articles.

Today the student and I went over using the preterite and imperfect tenses together to tell narratives in Spanish (preterite for foreground information/completed actions and imperfect for background information/ongoing actions). We did this by practicing these sentences via book activities. We then brainstormed short stories in English regarding what he and others did last weekend, and translated them to Spanish, paying special attention to the verbs in the imperfect vs. those in the preterite.
