How can Phonics tutoring help you?

Learning how to read requires understanding phonics on a practical level. Your son or daughter must learn to decode the sounds that can be represented by individual letters. This is required for reading and spelling, as well as for moving on to subsequent stages of the learning process. Is your child having difficulty in this area, or would you like to make certain they remain on track? Varsity Tutors could help you find an expert phonics tutor in Beaverton, OR, who could help your student attain success, by creating a study plan focused on them.

Different from phonemic awareness, which is the auditory-based ability to manipulate sounds within words, phonics is just as necessary for learning how to read. By knowing the sounds of every letter, your child can decode words as they move along in a text. There are numerous techniques a tutor could use. If your child is struggling, strategies such as odd word out, phoneme deletion, or sound-to-word matching may help them make the connection. The tutor will assess their proficiency level and then create personalized lessons that involve continuous assessments. Some children naturally pick up on the concepts more slowly. Varsity Tutors could help you find an expert phonics tutor in Beaverton, OR, who could help your child attain success by creating a study plan that is focused on them.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Beaverton, OR Phonics tutoring
Student D is doing well, but I'm going to start with the basics for her. We worked on letter and sound recognition today. She knows a good portion of her letters and can differentiate between upper and lowercase, but there's still a bit of uncertainty in writing some letters. Next session we will work on one-syllable CVC words and stay on those until she can easily identify each sound each letter makes and apply it to different words. Student C and I matched pictures to words, and he's awesome at that so we'll move on. He's also great at matching uppercase and lowercase letters, so we're going to start practicing writing letters and identifying sounds.

The student did a nice job drafting the essay that was due for today. Together, we reviewed some of the organizational and other mechanical mistakes. He revised several paragraphs. And then he did a reverse outline to ensure that the content was properly organized and contained all of the organizational devices needed for an academic essay. He also completed the final test in his workbook. He did very well overall but made some mistakes with subject-verb agreement and pronoun use. We started reviewing rules related to these sections and will continue to do so tomorrow. For tomorrow, he was assigned a new essay prompt and outline.

The student worked on his second summer reading essay. He finished the book already, so we discussed what he thought the main idea was and how it related to the theme of survival. Then he wrote the outline for his essay response, and started typing up his introduction. He has a better understanding of how to write an essay now and was eager to finish this one. He still has some trouble connecting the bigger ideas of the book with the writing prompt, and forgets some of the details which is why I encourage him to take notes as he reads.

This evening we began by talking about the strategies the student has for handling the multiple choice section of the AP test. He walked me through his process from reading the passage to approaching the questions and the answers he has to choose from. We spent the session working through a text and he talked through his thought process for each of the questions. He answered almost all of them with complete accuracy by using his instinct, process of elimination, and vocabulary knowledge. He will let me know if he wants to continue with reading comprehension or go back to the free-response questions for next time.
