How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

Your son or daughter will be attending a private high school next season, but they first need to prepare for the required High School Placement Test (HSPT). As a parent, you know there are no guarantees, but you still want to give your child the best advantage to score well on the test. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors can connect you with tutors in Beaverton, OR, who are skilled at helping students excel on their HSPT.

The challenge for eighth grade students is that the HSPT may be the longest timed test they have taken. The 2.5-hour test includes 300 multiple-choice questions segmented among five disciplines: language, math, quantitative skills, reading, and verbal. This translates to having 30 seconds to answer each question. A skilled professional HSPT tutor in Beaverton could give your child skill-building one-on-one attention. A professional HSPT tutor, who knows the test inside out, will make a difference. First, the tutor will assess your child's skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Then, they will create a custom study plan that focuses on what your child needs to know. The plan is flexible and changes as your child work to reaches proficiency. If your child needs a review, the tutor will provide drills to reinforce the learning.

Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

Beaverton, OR HSPT tutoring
Today we started with the historical reading passages. The student had trouble with the dense language. I suggested finding as many snippets of intelligible information in a given sentence before trying to string them together. From there she can try to turn it into a complete, coherent thought before distilling it into the main ideas. There seemed to be good progress with this method by the last couple of questions. She is demonstrating some improvement in the writing skills, too. She is more aware of her punctuation usage. We also talked about parallel structures and modifying phrases.

In this session, we covered two reading passages and three writing passages from practice SAT exams. Accuracy was reasonable at an average of 8 or 9/11 for most sections, though we will need to improve for the student's goal of a perfect score. We will do a single reading passage to try and help reinforce the new method next session, and then focus on math and preparing the battery of final meetings before the SAT on June 4th.

The student is doing fantastic in his preparation for the SAT next weekend. He only missed one question each in the Reading and Writing sections. His only real challenge is the Math section, where he missed about 12 altogether, between the non-Calc and Calc sections. I've assigned him homework and targeted Math review packets so he can get more practice before the SAT.

We went through the entire two Math sections and about half the Reading and Writing passages in a practice test. The student really went from strength to strength and I know she will do great. My only advice to her is to slow down a bit on the Reading. We went over some basic test-taking strategies at the end.

Today, the student and I worked on review of pronoun-antecedent noun agreement, noun-noun agreement, subject-verb agreement, homophones, logical comparison, and proper use of colons and dashes. Optional homework is to complete a practice writing and language section (35 minutes) in the SAT book. She is doing an excellent job with the writing and language section material. We will wrap up this section and go back to working on the reading section during our next session.
