Session Summaries by German Tutors

Beaverton, OR German tutoring
The student did really well today. We continued reading about Marco Polo, and then she wrote in Spanish a summary about what she read. She is well focused and a very strong Spanish reader and writer. We will continue to strengthen those skills.

We started by talking about the student's weekend, practicing the past tense in Spanish. We reviewed question words, which he knew very well since he had studied them. We went through some new vocabulary and the verb "tomar." I also had him answer some opinion questions using the words we have covered so far in the first few chapters of the book. We then went over some personality descriptions using a photo from a Star Wars scene. Finally, we reviewed the uses for "ser" versus "estar." He is progressing very well!

Today's session consisted of intensive conversation and practice with the preterit! The student told me about a party she hosted the day before. We wrote down all the past tense verb forms she used, and then practiced regular and irregular conjugations of preterit and imperfect, building off last week's lesson. We also discussed hosting and hospitality more generally, including relevant vocab. For homework, she is going to write a brief poem in Spanish using the 1st/3rd person singular form of any verb in the imperfect tense.

The student had been reviewing for her Spanish test over the week and showed significant improvement in her ability to form the preterite tense. She asked for help reviewing and for me to check her spelling and accents. We practiced the patterns for the different groups of verbs. There are several in this tense. I made fill in the blank questions in which she had to select the correct verb based on the meaning of the sentence and fill in the blank questions in which she had to choose whether the sentence required the present or preterite tense. The student did well on both sets of questions. When she makes mistakes, she can often correct them herself when she takes the time to look over her answers.

We covered the alphabet (A & B), colors and comprehension during this session. The student still requires improvement with her colors. She was very interested in the Caillou book that I read to her and even requested to watch the DVD video of the La Gallinita Roja which we viewed during the first session. She improved in her participation and speaking in Spanish. Her mother greatly helped with motivating the student to remain on task during the tutoring session. I left two books covering colors for her to receive additional practice until our next session. In addition, I left the DVD that includes 4 children's cartoons in Spanish.

In this session, I continued to work on reading in Spanish with the student, to increase her fluency and vocabulary. We read books of her choice and included various voices for different characters. We then worked on asking questions in Spanish and used practice from her workbook. Finally, we practiced discussing food and writing in Spanish with the use of a language app.
