The student sent me his two honor's application essays earlier today and I reviewed them. He took my advice from last time and made the suggested changes. They turned out very well. He's going to submit them tonight before the deadline. We also discussed the basics of a cover letter. We agreed to meet again next week to review his first draft.

We discussed the student's case study in detail. I reviewed the highlights of the case with her, we went over the case study assignment questions together, and she took notes on our discussions on the company's distribution strategy (whether to put more marketing spend into expanding the CFL product line nationally in the mass-merchandising channel). I suggested that she review the case and its numerical exhibits further before coming to a decision about how to advise the company on its decision (whether to pursue the M-M strategy or consolidate into the DIY channel). We are going to meet again tomorrow to discuss further and then convene again on Monday to review her final write-up.

The student and I reviewed the learning objectives associated with the next chapter. The topics covered include alternative dispute resolution and the options available including arbitration and mediation; the difference between state courts and federal courts, and the "types" of courts that fall under each category; the difference between "subject matter" vs. "in personam" jurisdiction (and the specific areas to review related to in personam jurisdiction); federal court jurisdiction facts such as the "diversity" rule of two individuals from different states and an amount greater than $75,000 as well as "federal question" (related to Constitutional subject matter); and the steps taken when a case is filed and methods of discovery.

Student 1 and I worked through unit 7 of her coursework, dealing with fiscal policy, and started working on unit 8, which covered monetary policy. She didn't struggle with any of the concepts. The session started out with us working through previous test questions that she had not answered correctly, so it was positive that we were able to talk through those and firm up understanding. Student 2 had a good attitude towards the material as usual, and it was an enjoyable session for us both. I did not leave her with any extra practice, but I will be sending her some questions out of her textbook to look through and I will give her feedback on her answers. There were no scores to note beyond what I noted in the previous session notes.
