Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Beaverton, OR Chemistry tutoring
The student and I covered the Boltzmann distribution of gases (root-mean-square velocity), Graham's Law of Effusion, Dalton's partial pressures, kinetic energies of gases, and pressure/volume/temperature relationships. She was able to learn along the way and pick up concepts that she had initially had trouble on. During our next session, I expect that her performance will improve, and she will grasp most of these concepts more readily.

The student recently covered atomic theory in class and had difficulty recognizing atomic information from the periodic table. We discussed the meaning of atomic numbers, atomic mass, and standard chemical formula writing to improve his comprehension. Particular focus was given to the identity of an element being tied to its number of protons and atomic number. I also showed him how to calculate the number of electrons or neutrons in an atom from a chemical formula, and he wrote down formulas in his notes to allow him to remember the process. The session finished with a quick review and practice of the heat equation; he did well with this material. I left him with some reading about atomic mass and isotopes to prepare him for his next class lecture.

1. We began with an introduction and understanding of the student's grasp of very basic concepts. We covered the following: Atomic Mass, Atomic Number, Isotopes, Gravitational force (from quiz/school notes), Electrostatic force (from quiz/school notes), Mass, Volume, and Density. 2. The student seemed to have initial issues understanding and explaining simple chemical concepts. She was initially having some trouble conceptualizing that a given volume of water will always take up the same space, but she understood after thorough discussion. 3. She was very positive and seemed willing to learn. Her attitude was excellent. 4. She and I spent a decent amount of time trying to make sure that she developed her own understanding of the important basic concepts.

Since the student had a test coming up, we reviewed the topics that were coming up. We reviewed converting from grams to moles to molecules/atoms/ions. We also reviewed concentration and molarity. We discussed resonance structures with formal charges and polarity. And we briefly went over percent composition of moles. I gave her advice on the test for how to pick out the most stable resonance structure and the difference between polar and nonpolar molecules. I guided her through some problems to make sure she understood how to do them.
