Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Beaverton, OR Biology tutoring
This session was a review for the student's next exam. We completed the review that she started in class where I could see she is doing much better. She had a couple of issues with the nitrogen cycle but all other aspects she seems to have a very good grasp of the information. We also looked at a couple of videos to help reinforce her ability to predict the movement of water between cells. If she studies the nitrogen cycle, she should do well.

We did a final review before the student's test on Friday. He seems pretty strong and seems to be more confident than in the past. We worked through review questions that his professor had given him, as well as questions I asked based on PowerPoints that he had given me.

The student is doing basic biochemistry in class. Since she hasn't taken chemistry yet, a lot of the information is very new to her. We went over the periodic table and basic chemistry so that she could understand what's going on in class.

We prepared for the student's test on meiosis, mitosis, and cancer. This is the same material that we have reviewed for the last few weeks, and he has a great concept of the material. As the session went along, he was able to pick out the correct answers and also explain essay questions that he had to apply his knowledge to answer (they were not straight up memorization essay style questions). I was very happy with his preparation, and we also discussed other biology related topics since he seems very curious about the human body and how it works.

The student had homework on meiosis. We drew cartoons of each step, focusing on the major events in each. Afterwards, she felt more confident in her ability to identify the stages and compare/contrast with mitosis. She got an A on her recent test on DNA!!!

This week we discussed heredity and did some practice with Punnett squares, genotype, and phenotype. The student already had a pretty great grasp on this concept coming into this week's lesson, so I provided her with some more advanced material to enhance understanding and to cover our bases for what her teacher might be covering next. We practiced dihybrid cross, pedigree reading, and X and Y linked disorders, as well as some basic probability. She received her test on cell division back and she scored an 89, which is the highest score yet to date, but still below her goal of an A. For the next meeting, I'd like to cover more test-taking and study strategies in addition to reviewing biology material.
