The student described why his marketing class is challenging. We identified issues with taking notes during class. He agreed to take notes in his textbook instead of ignoring reading, and we went over an efficient note-taking method for reading. We reviewed the material for a group project that is due shortly (analysis about why gas stations decided to be near convenience stores instead of auto repair stores) by talking about impulsivity and customer loyalty. The student reported he has a difficult time balancing his studies and his social life. He agreed to read and take notes on Chapters 18 and 19 by next week. He is very bright and personable. He should be able to get back on track before his final on May 5th.

The objectives included the role of the courts in constitutional interpretation, the Commerce Clause, the incorporation doctrine, the means-ends test (and the "levels" of tests), "levels" of First Amendment protection for noncommercial and commercial speech, procedural due vs. substantive due process, the Equal Protection Clause and needs for more scrutiny, the burden-on commerce doctrine (referring to federal interstate commerce transactions), situations in which federal law preempts or comes before state law, and the guidelines of the Takings Clause (also referring to eminent domain). For several of the objectives (and textbook content), I also provided her with supplementary definitions and information to help with the textbook explanations.

The student and I worked through her review questions from her current course work covering monetary policy. The material was rather challenging, as this is one of the most complex portions of the course. It was encouraging that after discussing the material, the student was able to answer the questions successfully. It was a good session all in all.
