Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Covered when to use direct object pronouns (le, la, les, l') and indirect object pronouns (lui, leur). Worked on identifying signs that tell us when a verb in French takes a direct object or when a verb takes an indirect object (when the verb is followed by the preposition 'a')"
"The student finished an outline of the book "Swindle" and began writing a three-paragraph essay to summarize the book. He didn't finish it for homework, but it was a good start. We scored it based on the six traits and we reviewed vocabulary and discussed.the protagonist, antagonists, climax and resolution. To improve the essay, the student should add lively verbs, thoughtful transitions, vivid language, etc. Good things: he used the outline to organize his paper, he included a metaphor in the essay, and he is using the thesaurus to increase the variety of words he uses."
"During this session we focused on the critical reading session. The student is starting to see the progress she is making and is becoming more confident for her test on Saturday. We made a plan for our lest session tomorrow. We are going to review her plan of attack for the essay, review a few math concepts, and spend the majority of the time focusing on strategies for the critical reading session, the section she was most nervous about. "
"Since the student and I finished reviewing the first practice exam, we went over the second one. I had her complete sample problems from each section that covered a wide variety of topics. We then reviewed her answers and we discussed the grammar, question style or math rule that applied. Overall, the student is showing improvement. She is taking the exam tomorrow, so I wish her the best of luck. "
"We discussed first order differential equations, specifically separable equations and first order linear differential equations. The student became very efficient at solving both of these types of equations."
"I checked over the student's HW, and I found that he did well. (He seems to be getting better at sentence correction :-) After that, we discussed the various rules for using quotation marks in dialogue. I gave him a worksheet on that for HW."
"The student and I worked on his chemistry homework packet, which covered boiling points, melting points, states of matter, converting between units of pressure, converting from Celsius to Kelvin (and vice versa), and using the gas laws. Progress was great! He seemed to have a thorough understanding of the material after the session."
"The student took a practice math section. He said it would help him to review important equations involving circles and graphs, so we identified pages in his textbook from school that he could review and then work some practice problems during the week. Overall, his math score should be very high."
"We continued practicing the Reading sections, solidifying the critical reading skills: 1) identifying question type; 2) finding key words; 3) searching for answers in the text. The student will continue this practice for homework, and in our next meeting on Saturday, we will begin to work on speed."
"We reviewed the student's chemistry lecture notes. The topics included the electronic structure of elements, half life, and scientific numbers. The student practiced how to convert the results into the scientific form and the concept behind it."
"The student worked through a series of practice problems for the assessment test, taken from the previous year's math test. He also worked through assessment test practice in reading, focusing on test taking skills."
"The student and I covered material from her midterm that she did not pass. This included probability, z-scores, confidence intervals, and binomial distributions. We even had time to cover some of her topics for next week such as linear regression. She struggles the most with conceptual information as her entire class is through Excel, so she is familiar with many of the formulas but not what they actual mean. She is going to send me her new problems once she gets them so we can begin to work on them together next Monday."
