Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, we went through the English section. We looked specifically at Phrase, Clause, and Sentence Errors. This included conjunctions, modifier placement, appositives, parallel sentence structure, and fragments. We also went through some punctuation."
"The student and I focused mainly on the science section today. We did a timed, 35-minute section and went over it. He was not able to get to the last couple passages, but he did well on the questions he answered. Instead of rereading the questions multiple times before reading the answer choices, I suggested that he: read the question, read the answer choices and eliminate when possible, go to the passage if necessary to get information from graphs etc., then look over the answers and question again. I also advised him to quickly look at tables and graphs for information such as: axis labels and units and any trends (or lack of) in the data. We spent the last 20 minutes on math."
"The student and I worked on the English and math sections, focusing on the strategies we decided were best for him: for English, reading through the passages and gaining context to answer the questions; for math, reading each problem carefully, especially the harder ones toward the end."
"Today we went through a section of each part of the test. At this point it seems math is what we need to spend the most time on moving forward. Both students' sores are certainly improving, but it seems that math (at least for Student A) has been mostly stagnant. I reinforced strategies we've been covering (particularly in math and writing). I assigned some work for next week."
"The student and I went through high-level ACT grammar concepts and did a practice English passage to apply said concepts. We also did a couple of Science passages. He is doing very well and improving rapidly."
"We spent our session covering the non-calculator portion of SAT Math. This included equations of lines, algebraic area and volume questions, and real-world application of linear equations. The student understood most of the concepts, only needing occasional recall of equation manipulations and hints in the right direction. She was very receptive of the information and had a positive attitude, even when the difficulty of the questions was increasing. She had her own SAT materials that we will be working with again next time we meet. They contain answer keys in the back, and her answers were consistent with the key."
"We reviewed and worked on math. We covered inequalities, absolute values, and exponents. We then answered and reviewed 7 questions. I explained to the student the importance of moving past a question when he is stuck for too long and not hesitating to ask for help."
"I introduced reading comprehension passages, including strategies and common question types, and went over an example passage. The student had some difficulties with vocabulary and following complex sentence structures. We'll work on that in our next session."
"The student and I worked through all of the sections, doing practice tests from the book. We worked on the writing section for the longest portion, as we realized that this has been more challenging than expected. She did a really good job with the math as well as the vocabulary parts of the reading. We will try to get a whole practice test completed before our next session."
"The student and I went through his completed quantitative section. He did pretty well overall, but made some focus-related mistakes, which is understandable. He will complete the verbal practice test before our next meeting."
"Today we went over sample science passages and strategies. I advised the student to make notes about each experiment or viewpoint to make it easier to answer the questions without having to constantly re-read the passage. For our next meeting next Sunday he will complete a full ACT exam in the red book."
"The student and I had a great session today! We spent our time working on Math questions together, going over some English topics, and practicing English. She is doing well! She is signed up for the February ACT, and I think she is going to be more than ready!"
