"Inequalities, proportions, word problems. 8th grade Math packet. Review of vocabulary and vocab card making. Beginning review of Quantitative part of practice test."
"This session we started by going over military time because the student told me that this would be on her state assessment test. We also reviewed math concepts that she was having trouble with that week. Then, we proceeded to go over the vocabulary concepts that I introduced to her our last session. I also checked her note cards that I assigned her to do for homework. She did pretty well, but some of the cards we had to correct."
"This was our first meeting in a few weeks. During this session, we worked on decimal concepts and reading comprehension strategies. I reviewed with the student the standard algorithms for adding and subtracting decimals. She had no trouble understanding these methods. We also worked on multiplication and division. For these topics, she requested a deeper conceptual understanding of the methods. We discussed how the commutative property of multiplication is used and results in the shortcut "counting places" method that is commonly taught. She demonstrated a good understanding of this concept and was able to move forward with accurate calculations. Finally, we worked on rounding decimals to various place values. During reading comprehension, I had her read portions of a passage and retell. She focused on using particular keywords in order to sound correct, however, her retellings are not always correct. We discussed her emphasis on being correct over her understanding. I urged her to slow down, reread, and apply visualization to develop a more thorough understanding of what she is reading. She would benefit from close reading strategies that move her towards deeper comprehension. We will continue to address this issue in the weeks ahead."
