In this session, the student and I looked at the Gary Soto story I assigned him last time and practiced "close reading." We highlighted in the use of different figures of speech by using different colored markers. By the end of this exercise, he agreed that it was a useful tool for him to "see" more devices used by the author, and understand the main thesis better. I assigned another story for him to read and close read for homework.

In this session, the student and I spent much time on the word building game. This game helps with the understanding of various blends or letter sounds that often go together. She is seeing combinations such as "sh," "ed," "ing," "th," "air," "are," and many more. This is a skill that is crucial when making sounding out words much easier and faster. This is also helpful to see how words are spelled considering in the upcoming school year the student will have spelling tests. In our reading time, the student and I read through a slightly longer picture book that I had brought along. Because of the length of the book, this is considered above her reading level; however, she was well paced and able to read through it all.

In this session, the student and I went over some basic reading skills. We practiced his comprehension and fluency. We also practiced academic vocabulary words. He is a great reader. His area of challenge is not making connecting guesses of a word when he doesn't know it. This is an easy fix, and we will work on that in the coming sessions. I left him with academic vocabulary words and challenged him to put them into use in his every conversations.

In this session, the student and I worked on correcting sentences in the simple perfect negative. She learned a new formula for writing yes/no questions in the simple perfect tense. Finally, we practiced the spelling rule, "I before E, except after C." She is doing a great job with her independent practice. For homework, the student is to write sentences in the simple perfect tense, and then rewrite those sentences into yes/no questions.
