How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

If your child is planning on entering an independent or private school, they could be expected to take the Independent School Entrance Examination, or ISEE. There are three versions of this test, lower, middle, and upper level, which are given to children based on their current grade level. The test takes approximately three hours to complete and assesses students' knowledge of verbal and quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and essay writing. Scoring high on this test is important, as many schools use test scores to help make decisions regarding admissions. Fortunately, Varsity Tutors' educational directors are experienced at helping students in Bartlett, TN, find independent ISEE tutors.

Varsity Tutors can assist you in finding an independent, professional ISEE tutor in Bartlett that could teach your child in a student-centered learning environment. Their understanding of the test material will improve as they work with their tutor to solve difficult problems and understand various concepts. One-on-one lessons also allow your child to benefit from feedback and explanations that are designed to try to improve their overall understanding. Furthermore, since one-on-one lessons are structured around your student's specific needs, the tutor can also create a customized study program that helps them try to overcome their weaknesses while skipping material that they already have understood, thus making the learning experience much more efficient.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

Bartlett, TN ISEE tutoring
Student A started first, and we went over the reading strategies. I timed him for two reading sections, and he missed one question each, both inference questions. We then went back over the answers so he had a better understanding of them. I went over how to make an outline for the essay in five to six minutes. He practiced making an outline for a topic. Then we quickly went over the vocabulary strategies, and I suggested he practice the next level vocabulary using the strategies. We then spent the remaining time going over mathematics topics. Student B spent time going over reading topics, as well. I also timed him for two passages, and he missed only one inference question. We went over the correct answer. We then went over math strategies. He needs more practice in multiplying and dividing fractions. I will start with this the next session.

The student scored an 85% on her Synonym review quiz. She missed the words "calamity," "impose," and "obligation." On her reading comprehension homework, she scored a 50%, and on math, 31/38. On math, she seemed to struggle the most with proportions and volume. For new stuff, she learned about the mathematical concepts of average and ratio. Furthermore, she took a timed fifteen-minute review math section, which we will review next time. For her final homework, she has a vocabulary list to study, along with reading comprehension passages and some math worksheets.

The student started with math and I had him find the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data. He remembered what the median and mode were and he was able to find that right away with the first set of data. Then I told him how to find the mean and the range and he practiced finding that. From there, he completed one more where he found the mean, median, mode, and range for a different set of data. He was able to find the median, mode, and range, but had some trouble with finding the mean. He knew what to do to find the median, he just didn't miss a number when adding them together. For reading, we continued working through the ISEE Lower Level Reading Diagnostic Test #1 and started at question 20. He completed 12 questions and got them all correct! He did fantastic today, he really persevered!
