"Today's session was reviewing. I want to make sure that she remembers everything we've learned so far. We started with numbers and she counted all the way to 100. Then we did dates as well as named all of the body parts. At the end, we did dictations of all the characters she has learned. She forgot a few, but did remember most of them. Homework is to finish the worksheet and to practice those she forgot."
"The student did his Mandarin and history homework. For Mandarin, he had to describe an image of a family using Chinese, and for history he filled in a chart on world religions."
"Today we went over the ideas surrounding language acquisition and what to expect in the face of the Chinese language as a whole. We discussed the origins of the Chinese educational system and how they are inherently wrought with the concept of memorization. We discussed the different language variation challenges from region to region, and the fact that Chinese does not possess an alphabet. We discussed the strategy for learning characters, beginning with the most fundamental characters and building on those. The student did indeed purchase the books that I recommended online, and he reported that they should be arriving soon. I lent him my main textbook for the time being. We discussed the initials of the language, and then went over the concept of tones with different vowel combinations. Overall, we were able to go through a decent amount of the introduction within the book. For homework, the student is going to practice a full page of pronunciation and look at the vocabulary and dialogue of our first unit."
"I had sent the student a short story by Borges, and she read through the intro and the first half. She worked hard on this and had many good questions for me as we reviewed the reading together. I brought more pages on ser/estar. We worked through most of this packet."
"In lesson 2 we covered grammar and 3 different grammar concepts that were acquired quickly. The grammar concepts were prepositions, personal pronouns and changing masculine articles to feminine articles when words begin with a, or h. The student is a quick learner and is able to apply what she learns immediately. We practiced the grammar concepts through translation and application in lesson activities. The quiz and activities were a success. She will finish lesson activities and learn vocabulary to be prepared for subsequent lessons."
"In this session the student and I did a conversational practice about what she does in her summer classes and her routine. She talked about what time she left for class, how long her classes are, and what happens in class. She also worked on a reading comprehension exercise that was a fable. She had more difficulties with the reading comprehension since she had difficulties with understanding the syntax. I gave her practice over the conditional (I would...) for the next session."
