How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The HSPT, or High School Placement Test, is a standardized test developed by Scholastic Testing Service, Inc., to assess a student's performance as they apply to attend elite private high schools. Many private and parochial schools use the HSPT. The test is administered independently by the private school at which your child is applying for admission. This test is administered twice a year: once in the spring, and once in the autumn.

Let Varsity Tutors connect you with a tutor who can try to help prepare your child for the HSPT in Bartlett, TN. Private tutoring can be arranged in the comfort of your own home, or at another public location, such as the Bartlett Public Library. Your tutor will work with your family's schedule and meet at a time and location that works for you. They are flexible, too, so last-minute changes are no problem. Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

Bartlett, TN HSPT tutoring
During this session, the student and I spent our time reviewing the vocabulary flashcards she had created, and continuing through the reading comprehension content. She had improved significantly with her vocabulary, and only needed occasional prompting when determining definitions. Furthermore, she was able to do excellent work when going through the reading diagnostic. When asked, she was able to implement strategies and explain her reasoning for making each selection. We will finish with reading content, and move on to math during our next session.

The student and I started by going over her HSPT book. I pointed out the different features, including the vocab list and the math explanations. She seemed excited to have a section where math concepts were explained. Then, we continued going over a math test she took. We went over concepts and practiced them. She has some homework she needs to finish up from last time, and I am also going to send her a few new problems to review today's material. We also talked about learning vocab words. Telling a little story or making connections seemed to help, so I would suggest she try this to learn words.

The student and I went over some math problems for the placement exam. Specifically, we learned about slope and volume. He understood the concepts once I gave him the tools to solve the problems. It was a great session.

The student and I worked through various online practice sets during this session. We both agree that this was a much easier way to work through problems together. Utilizing the practice tests was much more efficient, and she seemed to like that it would track her scores for her as well. We worked on practice sets specifically for series (a math concept she had expressed trouble with in the past) and for various verbal concepts based on our previous conversations about her trouble areas. I think this session was an improvement from our first session, where we were still trying to figure out our overall approach to our online sessions. Going forward, she and I agreed that she would continue to work on vocab (appx 10 words/wk as a goal).

The student completed a timed language skills practice test for the exam. She completed the exam in a timely manner. However, she had a few mistakes in this section. We will continue to practice with this section and work towards improving her accuracy in this area.

The student completed both the verbal and math diagnostic test. She did well on both, scoring a 78% in Math and an 84% in verbal. We reviewed some of her weak areas in math tonight, going over geometry and word problems. We also spent some time reviewing her verbal areas of weakness, which focused on antonyms and synonyms of adjectives and adverbs. I will meet with her one more time Thursday night before she takes the test on Saturday.
