This was the first session with this student. He and his mother informed me that his problems were twofold. He doesn't do as well on tests as he does with homework. Secondly, he has difficulty seeing how to progress through word problems. Since he is currently on spring break, we focused on problems from the section he just covered. I proposed a framework for him to approach problems by focusing on conversions into molar units to utilize information in chemical equations and then working his way back out to other units, as the problem requires. I also emphasized the importance of practice problems. This is difficult since his school does not use textbooks. His father will look for textbooks in the library and I will pursue looking for online sources of problems for him to practice on.

In this session, the student and I went through a 32-question review in preparation for an upcoming chemistry exam. He did very well overall but was rusty on some of the more minute details regarding gas law problems. He is a fantastic student to work with, because he is genuinely interested in chemistry and has no problem remaining engaged. As far as chemistry-specific study skills are concerned, I mainly reiterated strategies like recording and labeling all initial variables before selecting a formula in the quantitative questions (he works well with clear processes and organized information). For extra practice, I recommended redoing all of the questions without my guidance. I believe that his grades show that he has progressed immensely under my instruction.

This evening, the student and I had our last session before his spring break next week. We spent the entire time studying for his chemistry test tomorrow. We went through both of the practice tests he brought home and corrected each question he got wrong again at the end after reviewing them. He also had several exercises in the textbook that we worked through. My next session with him is scheduled for Saturday after his spring break.

Today's main topic of discussion was about valence bond electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory. We discussed how to draw Lewis structures, how to determine shape of molecules, and polarity and dipole moment from the Lewis structure. We solved several problems involving VSEPR theory. We also discussed how alloys are formed, and solved several problems from laboratory experiment about alloys. He has shown good progress Lewis structure problems. He needs to practice more problems in determining the shape and dipole moment of molecules. We will continue to work on this.

The student is preparing for exam 3, which is in a few days. Today, I brought a copy of exam 3 from a prior course and we worked through a majority of the problem. The problems focused primarily on solubility products, redox reactions, nomenclature of complex ions, and voltaic cells. I provided her with the answer key for reference as she works through the remainder of the problems.

The student and I reviewed last year's AP Physics 2 exam. We were able to solve it in under an hour, and I was able to correct some of her misconceptions. She especially needed to concentrate on circuits. We will continue to work on these. Then we spent the rest of the session going through old AP Physics B open response questions.
