To help him with his long division, I had the student estimate what the answer should be before trying to tackle 8 long division problems with 4 digits divided by 2 digits. He said that the estimating didn't help but he was able to complete those 8 problems a lot faster than he did 1 last week and with a lot fewer errors. He also estimated two digit multiplication and division and then had to explain why the actual answer should be higher or lower, to which we compared the actual answer. He did the 60 problem multiplication and 60 problem division drills again but instead of giving him 1 minute and then 2 more minutes and another 2 minutes and correcting what he did each of those times, I gave him 5 minutes for each right off the bat. He did a lot better with both sheets. We worked on fractions since that is what they will be doing starting in January. He figured out what part of a shape was shaded and shaded a shape based on the fraction given. Using these, I introduced him to the idea of simplifying fractions. I then had him simplify 7 fractions. To help with this, I had him find the greatest common factor for 15 sets of numbers. I left him 2 sets of the multiplication and division sheets to do by the next time we meet on the 8th.

We spent most of the time working through adding and carrying numbers and borrowing and subtracting numbers math problems. The student mostly struggled with simple addition and subtraction. She needs to practice with flashcards so she doesn't have to count on her fingers to figure out simple addition and subtraction problems, such as 13-5 or 12-7 or 8+3. I told her to get flashcards and practice daily. We also worked on reading. She has a tough time with simple words, such as "late," "that," and "he" as well as others. So, I made some flashcards for her to study several words. Also, we read a book together but she struggled, so I had her check the book out from the library and asked her to read it every night.

We worked through some geometry. At the start of the lesson she seemed confused about a few terms, so we played a game using playing cards in order to remember the geometric shapes.

The student completed her book report and then worked on subtraction. I'm trying to teach her skills to show her that it can be as easy as addition. After subtraction, we played some addition games.

Today we primarily focused on multiplication, specifically times tables. The student was having a hard time remembering her tables, so we worked on that, and I taught her some methods of remembering the tables. We also did some division because they are recently starting to go over division in her class. She did fairly well in both but she does have some work to do. I left her with an assignment and it was to learn her 3's up to 3x12 using the song we learned.

The student brought a lot of work home that needed to be looked at and corrected. Granted, she's doing a lot better now than before, but we had to take a look at what was going on. As we went through the sheets, she was confused at first, but then she started catching on and realizing the mistakes that she made. She worked hard to make sure that she understood everything. She was very eager to get all this done because she wants to do better in math, and she is! She's improving, but as I said before, it's a process. I can see her improvement though. The things that she used to struggle with before she now does in a breeze, and she is now catching her own mistakes and correcting them on her own! I'm pretty proud of her!
