We continued to read together. I advised the student to stop every couple of paragraphs to formulate the main idea of what he just read and figure out if there's anything "important" that happened. The fact that his English is not at a native speaker's level is an obstacle that is contributing to his struggle in this subject. When he reads he has trouble grasping the concepts between imaginary scenarios (thoughts, imagination, etc.) and real events. We will work on that as we come across it. We are also trying to work on his speed. He said he is feeling more confident about his last quiz than he did before our sessions. I left him some notes and guidelines to keep in mind as he reads to help him filter out the unimportant details and just to focus/remember the needed parts.

We discussed pending projects in both English and History. For English, we discussed some ideas for a multimedia project the student has on Huckleberry Finn, picked a topic, and found a relevant passage from the novel that she can focus on. In US history, we made progress on a storyboard she has to create based on the experiences of an immigrant. We found some online resources for researching aspects of the life of a Chinese immigrant in late nineteenth-century California. She should continue to make progress on these assignments. I am most optimistic about Spanish. She did her assignment well and seems enthusiastic about reviewing simple vocabulary. She has taken very quickly to the grammar (making singular and plural verbs, adjectives, and nouns agree, etc.). I assigned her 15 more sentences building on what we went over yesterday and today.

I created worksheets using the vocab that I had assigned as a review. We then discussed his Algebra 1 homework assignment. Overall, it was a good session.

We worked on the speech the student is going to have to give for the philosophy portion of her class. After some prodding, she started to surrender some good responses. She has a decent starting point, but she has a bit more work left before her speech on Friday.
