Went over review assignments the student has been given in preparation for her upcoming final. We spent a lot of time working together on nested if functions, vlookups and other keys to utilizing the program both for her classroom and exam purposes and in real life applications. This helped her get a better grasp of her own knowledge and growing alacrity with the software, which, in turn, seems to be bolstering her confidence. For the next session she will be ready with specific clues and hints provided by her teacher so that we can better tackle areas in which she is struggling. She will e-mail me some of the exercises she is being given so that I can work through them before we meet again.

First we talked about what the student wants to get out of the tutoring sessions. She seems most interested in programming a computer game of some sort, so that's where we'll turn our initial focus. In this session, we talked about basic computer programming concepts, variables, and programming languages. She showed me the projects she has done in the past. I will review the material and see how we can incorporate it into what I will be teaching her. We talked about what kind of computer game she'd like to create and decided on a "keep track of the coin under the cup" game. I will structure lessons to move toward that goal. The student's parents are going to order a book to use for these computer science sessions. We will begin reviewing the book together at our next session (Monday, 7/15). Her parents are also going to find an old computer for us to open and explore during the next session.
