Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Aurora, CO Microbiology tutoring
This was the first session with this student. He and his mother informed me that his problems were twofold. He doesn't do as well on tests as he does with homework. Secondly, he has difficulty seeing how to progress through word problems. We focused on problems from the section he just covered. I proposed a framework for him to approach problems by focusing on conversions into molar units to utilize information in chemical equations and then working his way back out to other units, as the problem requires. I also emphasized the importance of practice problems. This is difficult since his school does not use textbooks. His father will look for textbooks in the library and I will pursue looking for online sources of problems for him to practice on.

The objective today was to learn iterative methods for solving systems of equations. In a chemical engineering context, we can write a system of equations for an adsorption column and all the plates on the column. The goal would be calculate the liquid and gas fractions at each plate. Iterative methods were used. These involved transforming the coefficient matrix in ways that allow for quicker solutions. The material was put into a word document to aid with test review.

Today's session was spent preparing the student for her exam. We spent the majority of the session working on the different properties of waves. We looked at amplitude, period, frequency, wavelength, and speed. We did a practice question provided by her teacher, that tested the relationship of each of these variables to the other.

In this session, the student and I went through a 32 question review in preparation for an upcoming chemistry exam. Reid did very well overall, but was rusty on some of the more minute details regarding gas law problems. He is a fantastic student to work with because he is genuinely interested in chemistry, and has no problem remaining engaged. As far as chemistry-specific study skills are concerned, I mainly reiterated strategies like recording and labeling all initial variables before selecting a formula in the quantitative questions (he works well with clear processes and organized information). For extra practice, I recommended redoing all of the questions without my guidance. I believe that his grades show that he has progressed immensely under my instruction. Thank you.

We spent the entire time reviewing for the student's chemistry test tomorrow. We went through both of the practice tests he brought home and corrected each question he got wrong again at the end after reviewing them. He also had several exercises in the textbook that we worked through.

We reviewed the history of microbiology. We also covered eukaryotic cells, including the function of each organelle, and the prokaryotic cell, including the difference between them and eukaryotic cells. The student understood the material and was able to recite it and answer on the spot questions. We also went over unit conversions and study skills, including using tables and pictures. I think we covered a good amount of material, and she was able to better understand the information.
