Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we again worked on translation, as he had an exam coming up on the reading passage from the textbook; part of which was what we worked on last week. As they had also covered the passages in class, this was mostly review for him. We did find some sentences and phrases that he'd missed, so we were able to fill in that material, as well as reviewing everything."
"To begin our session, we reviewed the definitions of noun, adjective, and verb and the students gave examples of each. The first student's understanding of parts of speech has improved tremendously over the course of our time together. Next we reviewed the verb flashcards the second student made in our previous session and then read a cartoon in Minimus: Starting out Latin. Both students were able to recognize and translate Latin verbs in the cartoon. The second student was particularly good at identifying verb endings and subjects. Then we reviewed Latin verb endings and their corresponding subjects. I wrote Latin verb forms on the dry erase board and asked the students to identify verb endings and subjects. The first student's ability to identify verb endings and subjects has also improved. Then we read a second Latin cartoon in Minimus and the myth of Echo and Narcissus. To conclude our session, I quizzed the second student on noun and adjective agreement while the first student reviewed Latin food words by creating a menu."
"Went over the student's strengths and weaknesses and spent the bulk of the time reviewing verb forms - all 6 tenses of the indicative mood, active and passive."
"The student and I reviewed how to translate a Latin paragraph from his homework. He did really well."
"We focused on translations and basic grammar skills. He's making progress, but needs to continue to review all the basic Latin grammar and devote consistent time each day towards studying."
"We went over first conjugation verbs in the present tense and imperfect tense. The student gets his conjugations really well. I then very slowly started working with him on English-Latin translations using the vocabulary words he already knows. I did a lot of practice with slightly changing the number of the subject or the verb in sentences. English to Latin translations are really tough, and he is doing an excellent job on them. I do think we need to go over his declensions a little bit more, but he has a really solid foundation. He is doing great work."
