Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I started the session going over the work she did in both Reading Comprehension and Math. While she did very well in completing the Reading Comprehension section, she needs to work on the questions that ask about the overall tone of the passages. In the Math section, she only completed the questions she believed she could answer. We therefore spent time going over the questions she did not respond to as well as those she answered incorrectly. After going over these two sections, we completed the verbal section of the practice test together. She did well and started to use the strategies that I had shown her. For the following week, I asked her to complete the other sections of the practice test and do an additional verbal section of another practice test. While I asked her to time herself, I emphasized that she needs to finish all the questions - not just the ones she knows the answers to. Once she completes these sections on her own, I will be better able to gauge where she is. As I mentioned on Sunday, I would also be available to work with the student twice a week, if necessary, beginning in November."
"Today we began our session by going over the student's homework. She was to complete the analogy exercises and learn the first two rows of the Upper Level SSAT vocabulary list in the test prep book. I also told her to memorize the first page of prefixes and root words in the other prep book. I drilled her on most of the vocabulary words and she got the majority of them right. After we went over the vocabulary, we proceeded to work with the synonyms section. She showed a little bit of improvement in her performance after each exercise."
"We covered simplification of radicals, and I assigned homework on this topic. We also continued our review of geometry, and we began to discuss solving systems of algebraic equations. Then I gave the student a short assessment SSAT math section (25 questions over 30 minutes) to check on his progress. He did well on the easy question and fairly well on the mid-range questions. I will review the material in the assessment with him on Monday"
"The student and I covered vocabulary words today. We also did analogies and discussed strategies. Her homework is to study vocab words and do one reading and one verbal test on the website. Her attitude is good."
"The student and I did a huge review of geometry. He is now familiar with special right triangles and how to use them to solve complex problems. He is also aware of the properties of circles, tangent lines, and inscribed angles. We briefly touched on different 3D shapes that he may have to work with on the exam, but he will most likely be given a formula for the volume/surface area of any shape except for a sphere, cube, or cylinder. These are the formulae he should be sure to learn on his own."
"The student and I did a number of questions on the math and reading portions of the exam. She is improving well and getting more questions correct in each section. For homework, she should finish section 1 (math #s 20-25) and do section 2 (reading)."
