Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the format, length, and scoring of the test, as well as some basic strategies for the test. We focused on the Reading and Writing sections, and did sample questions of each type on both tests. She also started a vocabulary list of words to study to help with the sentence completion questions."
"Focused on reviewing arithmetic problems for the math section of the SAT. Student primarily needs to focus on the problems that involve variables, probability, and exponents. We will re-examine the areas of focus for our studies once she gets her test scores back."
"We worked on geometry after a practice test had proven a little too difficult. We went through circles, lines, parabolas, distance, midpoint, how to find if a point is on a line, slope, and how to find the equation of a line. Once she had the relevant equations, she was able to correctly answer the questions. I made her a sheet of equations to use on practice problems and to eventually memorize. Next time, we will continue going over geometry."
"In today's session, the student and I continued our discussion of SAT math concepts. We began with a review of linear equations and their applications, working through several sample problems addressing how to derive an equation to represent a given situation and identify y-intercepts and slopes. We reviewed exponent and radical rules and applied these to several more advanced questions, and discussed polynomial roots and long division. We will be targeting a review of exponents and radicals, as well as polynomial long division, in our next math session(s). I've instructed him to complete a math section prior to our next math session. Great work!"
"In today's session, the student worked on a calculator SAT math section. He had a little trouble today and didn't finish the section within the time limit. It doesn't concern me too much though, because we still have plenty of time to work on timing. However, I do think part of it is because he spends a little too long on problems once he gets about a third of the way through the section. I think it would benefit him to work on longer problem sets in order to build stamina. We are taking this week off, so he has a week in which he needs to do a lot of practice."
"In today's session, we began working on additional practice problems in areas that the student has been struggling with. We worked on problems dealing with data analysis and problem solving, percentages, rates of change, and combining ratios. Her confidence is increasing, as we are focusing on what the questions are asking and what we need to find. She said that she feels more prepared and confident in deciding how to go about solving these types of problems. In our next session, we will begin tackling more advanced math, including functions and quadratics."
