Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we scored two more practice sections- Math and Science. Both scores improved over the last test, especially the Math. Even more encouraging was that her highest Math subscore was geometry/trig, which has been where she's previously struggled most. Completing the practice tests has made her recognize that the Math questions are very similar from test to test, especially when it comes to geometry. She seemed very confident about this practice test."
"Finished practice test covering some concepts in algebra II and an extensive amount in geometry. Student struggled with perimeter and setting up ratios. Started new practice test, and already performing much better after getting used to the test format and style. Discussed types of questions that are common on the exam and how to approach them."
"Today we covered her practice essay and moved on to tackle math. In the essay, I found that the general flow of the essay was quite good. I focused on developing the ideas and focusing on connecting the ideas to the topic sentences. In addition, we talked about how to improve the timing of the essay and vary the word choice. We next moved into the math section and focused on arithmetic. Throughout the various topics and related practice problems we covered, we focused on reading the question carefully and planning the steps forward to solving it. For homework I assigned another practice essay and math homework from the SAT review book."
"In today's session, the student and I continued our discussion of relevant math concepts on the SAT, beginning with a discussion of a strategy for approaching multi-part math problems. We reviewed unit conversion and finished a multi-part math problem concerning unit conversion we began yesterday. We addressed ratio combination, two-way tables, and statistics and probability, applying these concepts to several advanced problems. I've instructed him to complete part of or a full math section prior to our next meeting on Friday, when we will discuss English and Reading."
"In today's session, the student took a practice SAT math calculator section and did very well. He only got 4 of the 38 questions wrong! Our focus continues to be on test taking strategies and how to better read problems and answers."
"In today's session, we began by discussing the topics covered on the SAT Biology Subject Test, followed by a short SAT prep quiz to start to determine which areas will be best to focus on. The student already has a good foundation in biology, which means that a lot of our focus will be more on review and preparation for actual test questions, rather than learning the material for the first time. After the initial prep test, we reviewed several topics, including cell structure and function, cell membranes, membrane transport, mitosis, and meiosis. Again, most of these subjects were already familiar to her, and the majority just need additional practice and review. For our next session, I will be sending her a video review of aerobic respiration as well as some practice questions that will cover both cell respiration and mitosis/meiosis in order to continue reviewing these topics and gain experience with them in a test question format."
