Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our last session before the student takes the ACT, so we went over the last two sections of the test in detail. First, we started with the reading section. She knows the layout of this section very well, and the order of the passages. She has a harder time with the social sciences and humanities passages, because those are the ones that are less like the types of material she is used to reading. She worked through a social science passage, which she did well on. Although she did not work through the entire section during this session, we skimmed through the other passages as well. Finally, we went over the science section. We have talked many times about what her approach should be to this section--she knows to not focus on reading through all of the experimental design information, but rather to focus on tables/graphs/figures because that's what the majority of the questions stem from."
"The student and I worked on another math section today. Once again, I noticed that the geometry problems are most difficult for her, so we did some extra ones together out of the book. We also did a couple science passages together, and she seems to be getting better at extracting information."
"Today we started with a targeted review of the geometry that the student is likely to encounter on her test (perimeter and area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles, volume of solids, measuring angles). Although she had forgotten many of the formulas, once she was reminded of them, she knew how to apply each one. She will need to memorize them for the test. We also continued to work on reading comprehension. She did very well on the questions that we worked through."
"This was our last session before takes the ACT. We decided to focus on the sections other than Reading. We spent a bit on time on each other section reviewing the key strategies for answering the questions, managing your time, and succeeding. We reviewed the logic of transitions and organization, general grammar rules, and how succinctness is your number one goal. We finished by going over general tips and preparation methods."
"This was the final session before the student's test. For the entire course of the session we went through practice English and practice math sections. He did very well in math and showed improvement in English shying away from a score of 28 by only a couple equations. As long as he can stay focused and go in with the right mindset on the day of the test I think he has a good shot at getting the 28 that he is striving for."
"This is the last session, and we went over first strategies in the essay portion. Then, we went over a reading section that the student took. Next, we went over a science section. Finally, we finished by going over again some important grammar rules."
"This was the final tutoring session prior to the student's test next week. We completed the final math section in his review book. At this point, I believe he is well equipped to do well on the real test. His knowledge of the math topics is great, and I believe that he will do really well."
"Did a final review of test material. The student needed little assistance with the problems and appears prepared overall. I gave him some tips on test taking. The student takes the test on Monday."
"The student and I went over math, reading, and science ACT practice tests that she had done, discussing strategies for doing better on each test as well as examining each question she had missed. She was consistently finishing these practice tests *right* on time, so I gave her some emergency strategies in case she found herself with slightly less time on the real ACT."
"We used our final session before the test to practice Math problems. The student actually know how to do a lot more of the problems than she thinks she does, and she sometimes misses "easy" questions because she assumes they are more difficult and complicated than they actually are. She already plans to retake the ACT in the Fall, so she is using this June test as a practice."
"We discussed specific details about the answering of questions in the research summary section of the ACT Science passages. She spent little time reading the passage before answering questions and generally finished early. Her timing has been an issue with her, so we addressed how she tended to go too quickly through those passages that took longer."
"Today the student and I went over the Math portion of the ACT. We went through a practice test together and I showed her which questions she was likely to see again and how to handle them. Next session we will also go over the Math section."
