Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student reviewed arithmatic with factors of nine. She completed two timed worksheets to determine how many questions she can answer in a minute. She improved each time and worked through the ones she did not complete or got incorrect."
"This was a good session. We went over the chapter test and then a bit of the cumulative review. Some of the early stuff he needed a bit of a refresher but picked it up well. He is doing well though."
"Today we covered balancing equations and the basic concept of The Mole. We did basic stoichiometry. We also discussed the need to meet twice a week. "
"I met with the student again and this time we only focused on the mathematics section. To my surprise she correctly answered pretty much all questions with time to spare. She's very focused and didn't get distracted so I don't think she'll have any problem with this section. I told her to complete the reading section for next week so we can work on something else."
"Reviewed strategies and worked together on the verbal section of the SAT. Discussed what follow-up work is necessary for tomorrow: at least a full/graded verbal section and the essay from the writing section (plus the multiple choice from the writing section if possible)."
"The student told me about her past experience with the ACT, having earned a 20, and that she hopes for a 24 to obtain in-state tuition. She told me that math is her stronger subject, so we started with the first section, which is English. I went over the strategy for attacking the test with a specific focus on the English section. We did a thorough deep dive on the process involved for some of the first questions on the section she was able to complete on the practice test. Finally, we administered an 18-minute mini-test on English to put the attack methodology into practice. On Wednesday she agreed to take a practice test under timed conditions, while we go over it on our next session on Thursday. We will be comparing and contrasting to her prior test results to gauge progress and areas for improvement. I enjoyed working with such a bright young lady."
"This session went well. The student is improving, and seems to understand stoichiometry much better. In this session we talked about gases and stoichiometry."
"Today the student and I covered all of the sections of the ACT, in the past we had focused mainly on the English and math sections because these are the sections he wanted to improve the most, but with the ACT so close, I thought he should look at all of the sections. Despite having to fight terrible allergies, the student performed very well this time, showing improvement in English and demonstrating a high competence in the science section. The math section was still a little shaky in the harder areas, but with a little bit more practice the student is sure to improve. He is completing a full ACT test for homework."
"Today the student and I went back and tried to cover the material from earlier in the year before we started meeting. While reviewing her first few quizzes/tests, we discussed limits in general, limits from the left and from the right, infinite limits, and the definition of the derivative. It seemed that she actually had a pretty good grasp on the content already. We finished the session with a few homework problems on concavity."
"The student and I started the session going over the writers checklist for her book report. She then finished a few of her homework problems and we went over the answers to check for accuracy. The focus was mainly on solving linear equations on her homework sheet. She and I did multiplication flashcards. I showed her the problem, she wrote the answer on the white board. Then we did a review of multiplies of 12. At the end of the session, she showed me the academic games she has on her tablet."
"First student had specific questions in chemistry and biology, so we addressed them by looking up the relevant sections in his textbook or finding diagrams online. We made study sheets covering polymerization, chemical tests, and nephrons. Second student wanted an overview of probability, which he's about to start. After we covered the basics, he asked for something a bit easier so we reviewed index rules."
"The student and I discussed his homework. He is working on division with counters. He has a strong handle on the concept of using the counters to split the bigger number into smaller pieces. The student also worked on a prewriting activity on what he likes to do during recess. Next time we will read through it and edit his writing. We also read for about ten minutes."
