Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued working on the Math portion of the SSAT and problems that had to do with rates, ratios, proportions, equations of lines, slopes, x and y intercepts, area and perimeter and circumference problems. We used some of the practice tests and problems online, and they helped a lot. It was a good session, and we are going to continue working on Wednesday and Friday of this week preparing for her SSAT."
"We read Act 2 of Romeo and Juliet and talked about the details. We then worked on paragraph construction and transitions. We also drafted and polished a topic sentence. We also practiced vocabulary. The student is completing 11th-grade vocabulary work."
"A large portion of this session was discussing the student's current state and how she felt about going back to school, which would start in a week. I suggested finding ways to take notes using different voice to text apps on her phone or laptop. I think this was very helpful and seemed to help lower her stress about what work she has on her plate."
"During this session, the student and I worked on various subjects to prepare him for the SSAT verbal and math portions. In particular, I helped him with his homework regarding exponents and also began leading him through a newspaper article that (like many of the other stories we have read) push his reading limits and test his ability to comprehend more complicated stories and vocabulary. I asked him to identify words that were difficult and define them in order to learn these words in context. We will keep working at this as we continue to meet for future sessions."
"The student did well today. We learned China, Hello, Confucius, and Sun Tzu. She typed them in Google Documents."
"We evaluated compositions written from the same prompt that the student's composition was about, and compared them to his work. He saw a few changes he would like to make to raise his score to a 4. We spent the last part of the session annotating a passage about Anne of Green Gables, and then answering three questions from the passage. He got all three questions correct! He will finish some more questions about the passage before our next session on Tuesday."
