The student learned that a great writer is also a great observer. So we sat outside and used all five senses to take notes on his backyard. We saw chipping paint on his swing set, heard leaves rustle in the wind, felt a fuzzy sunflower, and smelled/tasted the crunchy snacks his mom brought us. We wrote down these words and then used a thesaurus to look up other words that we could use to describe our senses. As a wrap-up activity, he wrote a paragraph pretending to be a soldier in the Civil War. He used sensory language to capture in detail a particular he learned about in school.

Since the student and I have spent a reasonable amount of time on the basics of composition, the pace of this session was accelerated in the interest of completing current assignments. She finished a reader response assignment from last session and made excellent progress on a separate, autobiographical paper. I also spent some time on organizational strategies with her, requesting that she create a table in MS Word which lists each type of assignment she has in the course. Since she has no syllabus or master list of assignments for the semester, I asked her to fill in this table with remaining assignments during the next meeting with her teacher. I have also asked that she re-locate all of her completed assignments, re-name the document to directly reflect the assignment, and save to an English folder. The autobiography assignment was a much more imaginative task, and the student really excelled; her sense of humor offers a unique writer's perspective that any reader would love!

The student's prompt involved adopting the narration style of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye, and applying it to a creative storyline. He chose to write from the perspective of a carpenter observing the crucifixion of Jesus, employing heavy use of the vernacular and stream-of-consciousness in his story. He went in some pretty interesting directions with this story, exploring the merit of classifying the apostle Paul as a "phony" and adopting the disinterested tone of a broody teenager. Adopting the writing style of a specific author is always hard, but I believe that he has worked through it in such a way that he will effectively be able to employ the narration techniques of JD Salinger.

This session was dedicated to helping the student prepare for a written assignment from his history class by reviewing the contents of the chapter sections to which it related. After identifying what themes, figures, and events in the sections he found especially unclear, background and contextualizing historical details were provided to give a more comprehensive picture of the respective factors involved. The chapter sections pertained to the Cold War period, focusing especially on political, economic, social-demographic, and cultural developments on the periphery of the former Soviet bloc, in post-War occupied territories, and in the United States during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s.
