We worked on graphing parabolas, finding the x and y intercepts, identifying the parts of a quadratic equation, and finding the vertex. The student is doing much better in combining like terms while adding and subtracting negative numbers. He also is doing well multiplying positive and negative numbers. These were 2 of the areas that he was struggling with when we first started working together, so he is definitely progressing. His attitude remains good and he needs to get a better understanding of the quadratic formula and finding both intercepts. We'll work on this in our next session.

The student had missing assignments from his week of absence that needed making up, so he worked on them today. They covered a variety of topics including exponents, combining like terms, and FOILing, all concepts that we've gone over in the past. Once he sees an example or two he has no trouble doing the problems on his own. He needed some help with exponents (especially negative and fractional exponents), but after awhile he got the hang of it. And he is showing improvement, as evidenced by his score on the last exam. The trick is getting him to remember how to do each problem out of context, or without a sample problem to guide him. If he can manage that, he can ace this class. We'll work on this in our next session.

Auburn, WA Trigonometry tutoring
The student had a math test tomorrow, so we did a lot of math review work on basic geometry-- angles, triangles, area/perimeter, quadrilaterals, and parallelograms. We briefly went over some music homework and at the end worked a little on Spanish for her Thursday test. The majority of our time was spent working on math. She did well. She was excited to show her grades to me, and she's made really significant improvement from the fall semester that she should be proud of.
