Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

Auburn, WA English Grammar and Syntax tutoring
The student and I completed his eighteenth tutoring session aimed at improving his overall academic performance. He reported that he felt as though he had performed well on his religion final earlier that day, but indicated that he had yet to receive a grade for the exam. During the session, he and I focused on preparing him for his upcoming social studies final. When asked about the format of the exam, he reported that it would be comprised of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. He indicated that his teacher had not provided him with a study guide for the test and stated that his study materials consisted of notes from the previous two chapters. As a result, I quizzed him on the information contained in his notes. At the conclusion of the session, he and I discussed effective study strategies, which he agreed to utilize prior to the exam.

The student continues to do a great job grasping the principles. She excels at creating her story sentences and has been breezing through her phonics warm-up exercises. Each week, she has been tasked with adding one more page to her story from the previous week. She had handled the assignments with little to no trouble.

I met this student today and she is such a spunky and bright girl! She is in the process of reading a book called "The Twits," and her mom explained that she is having trouble sounding out words. So we worked on sounding out some things. I think that for the next few sessions we should also work on our sounds and sight words using flashcards. That should help her. Overall, it was a positive experience!

This session's focus was on developing the student's draft essay for an English writing assignment on pedagogy, and the relative weight and importance of theoretical and generalizable vs. practical and actionable forms of knowledge and learning. Because the student had already methodically determined the evidence on which he defended the latter, more time was dedicated to articulating and refining its analysis, and to smoothing out the transitions and logical flow between and within paragraphs. While the greater difficulty associated with refining his analysis may have had to do with an especially rigidly prescribed essay structure, and with limits in the materials provided for analysis, talking through the consequences of the position held seemed to open up additional room for synthesis, supporting observations, and novel conclusions.

We reviewed a reading assignment. He had to read a novel called "Shiloh" and find interesting points in the book to write about why they were interesting to him. He struggled with finding some points and putting his thoughts together in order to write. He also struggled with some spelling. He had a positive attitude and was excited to be completing this assignment. I included some strategies, such as using phonemic awareness, to help spell out some words. I also told him to make a graphic organizer to help put his thoughts together. I left him with some worksheets to practice. He was able to incorporate different strategies for reading and writing.

The student and I worked on sight words and blending sounds to sound out words and read sentences. We played a game with dice and word families where she would blend the beginning and ending sound, and categorize the words as "real" or "not real."
