Auburn, WA Calculus tutoring
This session the student had some questions about some limit definition for derivatives problems, so we focused on those. These problems are great practice for his algebra, which has come a long way since we started.

The student felt a little behind from what was going on in class. We went over some of his homework problems along with a group quiz he took in class to help him get more acquainted with the material. We went over U-substitution for integrals, some integral identities, and just basic properties of integrals. We also went over some beginner differential equations. All in all the session went very well!

This was the first time that I met with the student. We first discussed what she felt her problems were and then we looked over her class notes. I suggested getting one of her old tests to see where she made errors and then correcting them. Our discussion focused on the application of limits and continuity.

Today we did some more practice on integrals. The student was able to do most of the problems correctly and understood how to solve the integrals. There was a few problems, however that he admitted gave him a hard time. These were more along the line of proof-type and word problems. His only trouble was determining how to begin the problem. After we approached it together step by step he was able to understand what to do. The first problem was using the mean value theorem to prove a certain relationship. The second was minimizing the cost of a tank for an aquarium. These problems were very well designed in challenging him to think outside the box of just systematically solving problems based on rules he can memorize.

We covered functions, models, limits, and derivatives. The student is a quick learner and has picked up the material quickly. We have agreed to another session tomorrow where we will continue reviewing for his final. I will send him a set of review problems for the week to complete by next Sunday. The style has been mostly lecture with lots of notes and examples. He will sometimes ask questions. He has a positive attitude and wants to learn all of the fundamentals. For strategies, we discussed deriving some of the formulas vs. memorizing them.

We reviewed for the student's exam on derivatives - power rule, product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule. He needed to go through examples of how to use each 'formula' at first, but he was able to apply each rule to different examples and identify which rule to use. We will have to spend more time going over the basics of algebra in the next few sessions.
